Desk sharing: untapped potential for sustainable office space optimisation
The untapped potential of desk sharing
Almost half of all respondents (47.7%) are not yet involved in desk sharing models. This finding from the comprehensive study “Survey on mental stress, strain and stress consequences“, conducted by the Institute for Work and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IAG), shows significant potential for companies. By implementing desk sharing, not only could office space be utilized more efficiently, but considerable costs could also be saved.
Desk sharing in practice: utilization and challenges
The study provides detailed insights into the current use and psychosocial effects of desk sharing. While just under a quarter of respondents report that all employees in their organization participate in desk sharing, in around 30% of cases managers are excluded from this practice. Furthermore, in almost half of the organizations surveyed, both some managers and other employees do not participate in desk sharing. This data makes it clear that although desk sharing is accepted, it is often not yet implemented across the board.
A critical view of desk sharing
Although desk sharing offers numerous advantages, the study also highlights significant challenges. In particular, mental stress and the difficulty of constantly adapting to new working environments were cited by respondents as negative aspects. These factors can affect the well-being and productivity of employees and require special attention.
Efficiency and environmental awareness through desk sharing
Another key finding of the study is that 52% of respondents look directly around the office to find a place to work. This practice points to considerable savings potential, both in terms of space costs and energy consumption. By reserving less space permanently, companies can significantly reduce their CO2 emissions. This shows that improved planning and utilization of desk sharing can not only reduce operational costs but also contribute to environmental protection.
